Using the LP’s original split in the track listing from the original record i certainly prefered the second side or side B of this album from tracks 7 to 11, they were just a little easier for me to like for some reason although i can’t put my finger on why. i liked the frantic nature of the song Hey Joe (Where You Gonna Go)while the bass line in Captain Soulwas very cool and funky, it is an all instrumental song but very good and it had me bobbing my head along with the groove. i think the biggest demonstration of Dylan’s influence can be heard in the song Mr. i read on the wikipedia page for this album that this is the first album from The Byrds not to include a cover version of a Bob Dylan song which i found interesting because i can certainly hear perhaps the influence and similar characteristics between them and Bob, almost like they use him as their inspiration and try to copy his style, imitation is the biggest form of flattery after all. The albums starts off with the song 5D (Fifth Dimension)and i found it fairly calm and dreamy which is how i described their first album so i was pleased to find their music hadn’t changed too much from the last time i had listened to them, this dreamy almost psychedelic style continued and probably even intensified in the second song Wild Mountain Thymewhich i was able to feel relaxed while listening to it. If you would like to support me and my blog, pleaseĬonsider buying me a coffee by clicking the image below. the two albums are separated by almost 13 months with another album in between (albums were released much more frequently back in those days huh) so i imagine there couldn’t have been too much difference in their styles since not much time had passed although the band did suffer a personnel change with lead songwriter Gene Clark leaving the band and the other members Jim McGuinn and David Crosby attempting to fill the songwriting void left by Clark while recording this album. Tambourine Manwhich was also part of this albums journey and an album i fully enjoyed so i was certainly interested to see if i enjoyed this album equally as much as the first.
